Y CHROMOSOME DNA TEST
What is a Y DNA Test?
Y-DNA testing analyzes the Y chromosome, which is inherited from father to son. This characteristic makes it effective for tracing paternal lineages. This testing option can help determine if two males share the same paternal DNA.
Key Aspects of the Y Chromosome
The Y chromosome is one of two sex chromosomes in humans, with the other being the X chromosome. It is present only in males and plays a role in determining male characteristics. It contains approximately 59 million base pairs, making up about 2% of the entire human genome.
Common Reasons This Test is Performed:
Below are commonly shared reasons to perform a Y Paternal test.
- Peace of Mind
- Inheritance
Types of DNA Tests:
- At-Home Y DNA Test: This is a non-legal genetic test designed for peace of mind.
- Legal Y DNA Analysis Test: This test provides legally admissible results suitable for court use. It requires that all DNA samples be collected by a third-party collector. The samples are then tested by a partner lab accredited by AABB (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks). Establishing a chain of custody is necessary for the results to be used legally.
How much does a Y Chromosome DNA test cost?
Pricing for an At-Home Y Chromosome Test kit starts at $399.99, Below are our home testing options.
Our legal Y STR (Standard Tandem Repeat) tests start at $499.99. DNA sample collection are not included in the cost of test. Learn how to schedule an appointment below.

What method is used to collect my DNA samples?
The standard method of collection is a cheek swab. Sterilized cheek swabs are placed inside the mouth and brushed against the cheek on both the left and right sides for 30 seconds or more.
Alternative samples, like blood collections, have the same accuracy as the cheek swab method. The difference is that blood specimen collections are painful and more invasive.
Will my information be kept private?
Yes. Your DNA stays protected. Our partner lab keeps all testing information private between you and other test participants only.
They store samples for just three months before destroying them completely. Your results remain confidential and are only shared with the people directly involved in your test.
The only exception? A court order – and even then, the lab will notify you before releasing any information.
Frequently Asked Questions about Y DNA Tests
How long does Y Chromosome test results take?
Results turnaround time is 5 to 7 working days from the date your samples arrive at the lab. Upon completion of your DNA analysis, a copy of your results will be mailed to your home. A second copy will be emailed to you.
Are Y DNA Test be used for legal purposes?
Yes, a legal Y-STR test is necessary for your results to be a legally admissible document. At-home DNA tests are not legally admissible; this option is for informational use only.
How accurate are Y Chromosome DNA tests?
For close relationships, such as confirming a father-son relationship, Y-DNA tests are extremely accurate, with error rates below 1%. The accuracy decreases for determining more distant relationships as the relationship becomes more remote.
Our partner lab is accredited by the AABB which ensures you DNA analysis will be tested at the highest industry stantards.
Can a Y STR DNA test determine paternity?
Y-DNA tests do not intend to determine the paternity of a male child. This test helps determine if two or more males share a common paternal Y chromosome. Depending on the participants of this test, it helps confirm a possible paternal relationship.
What is the difference between ancestry and relationship test?
Below are the differences between Y ancestry and relationship DNA test types:
- Y Paternal Ancestry Test: This testing option traces the entire paternal male lineage. It requires a male contributor to submit a DNA sample and reports the possible geographical locations the contributor’s paternal lineage has traveled over time.
- Y Chromosome DNA Test: This testing option determines the possible biological relationship between two male participants who may share a common paternal ancestor.
