What is Forensic Testing?

Forensic DNA testing, a type of relationship testing, utilizes alternative DNA samples, such as hair follicles, blood stains on garments, or toothbrush samples, to help determine biological relationships. This can include relationships between parent and child, alleged siblings, or grandparents and grandchildren.

This type of test is performed when one or more parties involved are unavailable to participate in the standard DNA testing process. Common reasons for unavailability are:

  • Deceased person.
  • Under-aged child whose parent wants to keep details discreet.
  • Unwilling participant.

It should be noted that forensic tests used for criminal investigations are different from relationship DNA testing.

Criminal Investigations:

Forensic samples found at crime scenes are used to analyze body tissues, blood, and/or other bodily fluids collected during an autopsy or from the crime scene to analyze and interpret findings in order to determine the cause, the manner, and the time of death, and in some instances, to establish the identity of the deceased.

Relationship DNA Testing:

DNA samples are submitted to our partner Association for the Advancement of Biotherapies and Biology (AABB) accredited DNA laboratory. This accreditation ensures the results will be recognized by family court nationwide. Please note that the type of DNA sample and who possesses it greatly determine whether your forensic test qualifies for legal chain of custody.

Please note: When considering using forensic DNA samples for DNA analysis we recommend that you request permission to use the forensic sample for non-legal DNA tests. Use of a DNA sample without permission may incur legal consequences in your state. Please check your state’s guidelines about using DNA without permission or speak with a legal professional.

Legal DNA tests permission is required before testing is performed.
