AVUNCULAR DNA TESTING
Discover the truth about paternal or maternal relationship with an avuncular DNA test, designed to reveal whether an aunt or uncle is biologically related to their niece or nephew. This test serves as an alternative to paternity testing when an alleged father cannot perform a DNA test. It offers clarity for personal peace of mind and legal matters, helping you navigate important family questions
What is an Avuncular DNA Test?
An avuncular DNA test determines if an aunt or uncle is biologically related to their niece or nephew. This test analyzes 18โ24 genetic markers to indicate the probability of biological relationships or exclusion. It is used when paternity, grandparent, or sibling DNA testing cannot be performed.
Common Reasons To Perform This Test
- Personal reassurance
- Inheritance cases
- Immigration evidence for U.S. visa applications

Frequently Asked Questions About Aunt/Uncle DNA Testing
What type of specimens will be collected at my DNA appointment?
Cheek swab sample collection is the industry standard. Each swab is placed inside the mouth and brushed against the cheeks on both sides for 30 seconds per person.
Blood sample has the same accuracy as cheek swab samples but are moe expensive, painful and invasive method of collection.
Can sample collection happen in two different states?
Yes, sample collection appointments can occur in two different states if we have a location near each city.
How much DNA do aunts and nephews share?
Aunts and nephews or nieces share about 25% of their DNA
How accurate are avuncular DNA test results?
Avuncular test results can be reliable but vary based on several factors. Results yield probabilities from less than 10% exclusion to over 90% inclusion. These tests generally provide lower statistics than direct paternity or maternity tests due to the more distant relationship. Testing additional known relatives can enhance probability results.
The positive predictive value (PPV) exceeds 99% when comparing more than 15 Standard Tandem Repeat (STR) loci with a likelihood ratio greater than 10. The negative predictive value (NPV) exceeds 99% when the likelihood ratio falls below 0.1.
Are my home DNA test results private?
All specimens and results remain confidential. Specimens are stored for three months before destruction. Results release occurs only to participants involved in the test, except when a court order is presented to the lab. The lab will notify the client before releasing results.
