How Long Does A DNA Test Take?

Curious about how long a paternity test or related DNA testing service takes? Here’s a comprehensive guide to typical turnaround times for the most common DNA tests.
Paternity Test Turnaround Times
- Standard Testing: 2-3 business days after the lab receives all DNA samples
- Same-Day Results: Available for an extra fee. Results ready by the end of the business day when the lab receives samplesโnot the day samples are collected
- Home and Legal Testing: Both have identical turnaround times
Extended Testing
If sample quality is poor, the lab may extend testing by 2 additional business days. We will notify you if this happens. The lab will not release results until testing is complete. Once DNA analysis is complete, you will receive results by both mail and email.
Forensic DNA Test Results
Turnaround time depends on the type of sample submitted. Common forensic samples have these processing times:
Sample Type | Turnaround Time |
---|---|
Toothbrush samples | 2-3 working days |
Hair follicle samples | 2-3 working days |
Ear wax samples | 2-3 working days |
Bone samples (femur) | 10-15 working days |
Semen samples | 2-3 working days |
Finger and Toenails | 2-3 working days |
Note: Forensic samples may be used for legal testing depending on factors such as sample type, court orders, or if samples are held by your local coroner’s office.
Legal testing requires a strict chain of custody. DNA samples must be collected by an unbiased collector, and testing must be conducted by an AABB-accredited DNA laboratory. This accreditation is required for DNA test results to be legally admissible. Call 888-970-4211 for forensic legal testing information.
All forensic samples can also be used for home peace-of-mind testing.
